Pro Cycling Stage Races
The Tour de France, Giro d'Italia
(Tour of Italy) and the Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain) are the
three major stage races and the longest ones of the UCI International
Calendar, at three weeks each.
The Tour de France has long been a household name around the globe, even among people who are not generally interested in professional cycling; it is for cycling what the FIFA World Cup is to football (soccer) in global popularity. Pro cycling is the most popular summer spectator sport in Europe. The Amgen Tour of California is the spring-time version of the Evergreen Tour. In the first year, an estimated 1.2 million spectators lined the streets to watch the race. This is the kind of exposure Evergreen Tour can bring to the State of Washington.
What is a Stage Race?
Professional cycling teams made up of 5 to 8 riders each come from all over the world to compete over several days of racing ("stages"). Each day of racing is from 80 to 120 miles. The rider with the best accumulated time wins the race. Prizes are awarded both on a daily basis and for the overall winner. There are several competition categories within the race. more...
Evergreen Tour
The Evergreen Tour aims to be among the most prestigious road bicycle races in the US. It will travel through Washington State and its neighboring states and province during a week in August. The race details are not set at this point. The route, competition specifics, exact dates and teams are dependent on gathering sponsoships and securing a place on the UCI calendar. Our requirements to hold the race are:
A UCI mens stage race... only the best riders.
At least $100,000... for incentive.
At least 5 days... long enough to show the region.
In August... for the best weather.
