Stages

A "stage race" runs over several days and is divided into a number of stages. Each is a separate part of the overall race and has daily prizes for winning. The time it takes each rider to complete each stage is noted, recorded, and accumulated. Riders who finish in the same group are awarded the same time, with possible subtractions due to time bonuses. Classifications

There are several competition categories within the race which are known as classifications. The ranking of the riders by accumulated time is known as the General Classification, or GC. The overall winner is the one who is ranked first on GC at the end of the final stage. The winner is usually a multi-talented leader of a team. There are also classifications for points and mountains which favor sprinters and climbers. Stage races can also have other special competitions. Culture

Stage racing has its own unique culture. It is part sports event and part traveling circus. The race caravan, fans along the route, and festivals at the start and finish are all part of the event. Public and VIP access to the race provides sponsors marketing and entertainment opportunities. more...
